Group Wants Notre Dame Removed from Catholic Directory
The American Life League is calling for the University of Notre Dame to be removed from the official list of Catholic Institutions after the University invited Obama, an avid (rabid) abortion supporter, to give the commencement address.
Thousands have signed a petition that has been circulated to protest the Scheduled May 17 commencement, rightly pointing out that Obama's views on abortion and stem cell research "directly contradict" Roman Catholic teachings.
I must confess that I have mixed feelings about this.
I am as anti-abortion as anyone you'll find. Abortion murders children. Period. On the other hand, it is legal and Obama (or at least his tele-prompter) is the leader of the free world. While Notre Dame is a Catholic institution, it is also a University whose primary function is a post-secondary education, not a worship center.
I think Newt Gingrich had an excellent idea. He has proposed that Obama should be allowed to speak at Notre Dame (without protests or disruption, even though that is more consideration than the left would show in a reverse situation). At the same time, the pro-life community should organize a nation-wide vigil or time of getting together for the purpose of education and commemoration for the lives lost through abortion. This certainly seems like a productive opportunity.
Either way, the chance to make our voices heard should not go to waste.
