Biology Loves Irony

Colorectal cancer, long linked to major consumption of red meat, has been found more commonly among vegetarians.

A British study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition determined that among 52,700 meat-eaters, fish-eaters, vegans and vegetarians, the latter group had a significantly higher incidence of the devastating disease. The scientists were stunned; they don’t know why this may occur but are planning on future studies to investigate. The finding is especially surprising given that vegetarians and fish-eaters had markedly lower rates of every other cancer compared to carnivores.
